Patently Facebook

Facebook recently was granted a patent for their news feed, they claim to have invented in 2006. This strip looks ahead to what else they might try to claim.

Could it be that we’re such trend-setters at Status:THIS, or that these social apps have started to reach critical mass?

Another of the webcomics I follow posted a check-in app strip today.

Check out PVP’s entry here.

Got an email today from Ron Callari over at Inventorspot.com requesting an interview about Status:THIS. That interview still needs to be scheduled, but he sent me a link to an article in which I’m listed as one of the “top ten social media cartoonists”. Holy cow!

I’m sure it’s listed in no particular order, but a few of you have already pointed out that I’m in the #1 slot. By merit or not, I’ll take it ;)

At the end of the blog (page 2), there’s also a way to vote for your favorite. If you dig the strip so far, feel free to go vote. And thanks again, Ron for the mention!

Had to post a link to this strip about the iPad. The site is Extralife and is done by the awesome Scott Johnson, who also does podcasts such as The Instance, Extralife Radio and Fourcast.

Check out the comic here.

Mashable Reprint 01.29.10

I’m going to do my best to not make too many posts thanking, in fact gushing, over fans and followers of this site. I’ll try to control myself. That said, I feel this post is warranted.

Friday, January 29th 2010 started off like any other. Got up and hauled my butt into Midtown, Atlanta, picked up a large hazelnut latte and blueberry muffin and settled in at my desk.

At some point that morning, Jeff had tweeted out the first edition of the Status:THIS comic. Shortly thereafter, I got an email from Twitter saying Adam Ostrow, editor-in-chief of Mashable, was now following me! He also retweeted the comic, which touched off a holy-crap day made of pure awesomeness.

Adam DM’ed me asking for permission to reprint the comic on Mashable, which I happily granted. I soon got another email back saying it had already gone up in a new Mashable article about our new site. The article was awesome, and to date, has been retweeted over 700 times and shared over 50 times on Facebook.

Scobleizer Reprint 01.29.10

But that’s not all. Later that afternoon, Jeff came by my desk and asked if I’d ever heard of Robert Scoble, which of course I had. He told me to go to Scobleizer.com, and right there on his homepage was my comic! He’d seen the retweets and added it to his lengthy article running down Foursquare, MyTown and Gowalla. So far, it’s been retweeted from his blog another 190 times, as I’m writing this.

Wow, what a totally amazing day. Our stats show over 160 feed subscribers and over 1,600 unique visitors for that day, but most people that saw the comic saw it on Mashable or Scobleizer (another ten times as many, who knows). That’s fine with us, we just want to get the word out. For a fledgling comic/blog and (maybe) podcast, I could never have dreamed of a better reception. So far I’ve picked up over 80 new followers, which I hope not to disappoint.

We’re still working on the possible schedule for the comic. Once a week seems too infrequent, so we’re seeing if twice a week is feasible. But there will also be non-comic blog posts that somehow relate to social media and the “emerging web”. We’re still kind of feeling our way around here, and we invite you all to share the journey.

Hopefully in the next couple weeks the site will be redesigned and a schedule will start to reveal itself. Until then, welcome and again, THANK YOU!
